Salzburg, Austria
View of the Alps and Salzburg from the top of castle hill. Taken in January 2004 on my travels with the lovely Angela Barcelona. We hiked up the hill in the freezing cold after a great night sleep in a private hostel room (which was an accident). The view from the other side of the castle was just as magnificent. The church steeples, winding river, and mountains were truly breathtaking. If it wasn't so chilly we could have stayed up there forever. In fact you can, you can stay at this castle, and have the view everyday. You could see the courtyards of the churches where old men played chess with giant pieces. This was one of the most charming things I saw while in Europe, these giant chess games in more than one country.
